Compliance to Environmental Regulations: The Indian Context

    Get PDF
Abstract Theoretical exposition of the trade-environment linkage (in the form of Environment Kuznets Curve) has been extensive. While one set of studies show that with the increase in per capita income environmental degradation would decline, the other set of studies has shown that no such trend exists for developing countries. Though environmental laws are in place, firms display a very low level of compliance in developing countries. This article brings out the low level of compliance to environmental regulations in India while trying to identify the main causes

An unusual case of huge hamartoma of breast in a 23 year old female: a case report

    Get PDF
Breast hamartoma is an underdiagnosed and poorly recognized rare benign lesion, accounting for approximately 4.8% of all benign breast lumps. There is lack of awareness of the characteristic clinical and histologic features of this entity in clinicians and pathologists. The pathogenesis of the development of breast hamartoma is still not fully understood. A 23-year-old female presented with a huge painless lump in right breast. The lump was present since last nine years. It was previously of the size of a bean, which rapidly increased to the present size during her pregnancy. FNAC revealed features of lipoma. However, on histopathological examination diagnosis of Hamartoma was rendered. A definitive diagnosis of hamartoma is hard to achieve on clinical examination, imaging studies and fine needle aspiration cytology. A correlation of histology, imaging findings with clinical impression is necessary

Evaluation of ultrasound guided verses nerve stimulator technique of interscalene brachial plexus block: insights from Indian multi-super specialty hospital

Background: To provide adequate intraoperative anaesthesia and postoperative analgesia for orthopaedic surgery continues to be a procedural challenge. The administration of brachial plexus anaesthesia can be facilitated through nerve stimulation or by ultrasound guidance. Hence study was conducted to compare differences in these techniques in patients undergoing interscalene brachial plexus block (ISSB).Methods: In this prospective, randomized, observer-blinded study, 60 patients (Male=41, Female=19) were scheduled for orthopaedic shoulder and upper arm surgeries matching inclusion and exclusion criteria. Patients were randomly allocated to either Ultrasound (US, n=30) group or Nerve Stimulator (NS, n=30) group through a computer-generated randomization. Results: There was significant difference between US and NS group with respect to average number of attempts taken, block performance time (BPT), onset of sensory and motor block, duration of motor block and patient satisfaction score. Whereas not much significant difference was observed in duration of sensory block, block success rate and incidence of post operative side effects. Conclusions: The results suggest that US guided ISBB is significantly superior to NS guided block in terms of faster onset of action; lower number of attempts to locate Interscalene brachial plexus; longer duration of block and overall success rate with favourable tolerability at real-life scenario

ABSTRACT The nicotino hydrazide (1) on reaction with carbon disulphide and ethanolic potassium hydroxide followed by treatment with hydrazine hydrate give 4-amino-5-(pyridin-3-yl)-4H-1,2,4-triazole-3-thiol (3). The compound (3) when treated carbon disulphide in ethanolic potassium hydroxide undergo cycloaddition to produce 3-(pyridin-3-yl)

Caste and identity processes among British Sikhs in the Midlands

    Get PDF
This article examines the role of caste in the lives and identities of a small sample of young Sikhs in the English Midlands, using social psychological theory. In many academic writings, there is an implicit representation of caste as a negative aspect of South Asian culture and religion, and of caste identification as a means of oppressing vulnerable outgroups. Twenty-three young Sikhs were interviewed, and the qualitative data were analysed using Identity Process Theory. The following themes are discussed: (i) Caste as a Dormant Social Category, (ii) Anchoring the Caste Ingroup to Positive Social Representations, and (iii) Caste as an Inherent or Constructed Aspect of Identity? It is argued that neither caste nor caste-based prejudice appear to be prominent in the lives and identities of our interviewees but that, because caste is an important symbolic aspect of identity which can acquire salient in particular contexts, some Sikhs may wish to maintain this identity though endogamy. What is understood as caste-based prejudice can be better understood in terms of the downward comparison principle in social psychology. The implications for caste legislation are discussed
